02 / Take it slow
Gokarna
A temple town with the sea on its doorstep. Spend time in town, head to Om Beach, and leave a little room in the day for doing absolutely nothing.

03 / Along the coast
Murudeshwar
A towering Shiva statue, a seaside temple and the Arabian Sea stretching out beyond. Come for the remarkable setting, and take your time taking it all in.

04 / Close to home
Mirjan Fort
A laterite fort on the Aghanashini, a short drive from town. The easiest outing if you want a change of scene without giving up the whole day.

Overnight trips
Let the forest set the pace.
A suggested two-night stay, if you can spare it before or after the wedding.
Dandeli & Ganeshgudi
Trade the coast for the forests around the Kali River. Dandeli is a place to settle in, listen for birds and leave space for a little adventure.
Spend one day around the river and another enjoying the birdlife around Ganeshgudi. If rafting is on your wish list, check availability and river conditions with a local operator before booking.

Into the ghats
Jog Falls
One of Karnataka's great waterfalls, inland through forest roads. The fullest flow is in and just after the monsoon; by December the water is often quieter, and still worth the drive.

Further up the coast
Karwar
A quieter coastal town north of Kumta, with a wide beach and the sea on the doorstep. A good extra night if you want more coast after the wedding days.

Surf the river mouth
Mulki
South along NH66, where the Shambhavi and Nandini meet the sea near Sasihithlu. December usually sits in the surf season. Check conditions and a local school on the day; we are not naming one.

South Goa beach
Palolem
The closest popular Goa beach to Kumta: a crescent of sand in Canacona. Many guests fly into Goa anyway; if you add a night here, the Travel page has the coach and airport notes.

Churches and laterite
Old Goa
Further into Goa, the former capital: the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the churches around it. A change of pace from the beach, and a good pairing if you are already in the state.

Northern Kerala
Bekal Fort
A laterite fort on the sea at Pallikkara, in Kasaragod. The first famous Kerala stop if you keep driving south on NH66. Give it a full day, or stay the night nearby.

Further south still
Fort Kochi
Chinese fishing nets, old streets, and the harbour. Popular, and a long way from Kumta by road. Treat it as a train or a short flight, not a drive you squeeze between wedding days.

Before you set off
A little planning,
A little planning,
a lot to discover.
Give yourself time. Our suggested visit lengths are a starting point. Typical drives from Kumta town are about 20 minutes to Mirjan Fort, about 40 to 45 minutes to Murudeshwar, Gokarna or Yana, about an hour to Karwar, about one and a half to two hours to Palolem, about two to three hours to Dandeli, Jog Falls or Old Goa, about three to three and a half hours to Mulki, and about five to six hours to Bekal Fort. Fort Kochi is a long day's drive, or better by train or a short flight. Open each route for current estimates; your accommodation may be a different starting point.
Choose the pace that suits you. Yana involves walking and steps. Mirjan Fort is the gentlest outing. For an easier day, keep your coastal plans simple and check access with your driver or accommodation.
Leave room for the celebration. Keep overnight trips and longer drives for before or after the wedding, and check local opening hours and activity availability before travelling.
